Black Alice II: Interlude One

The thing about sharing head space with the shadow is that she never stops. She doesn’t do anything that even resembles sleep. She doesn’t even do anything like rest. She’s in constant motion, like a shark swimming round and round so it doesn’t die. Which means I don’t ever stop, either. I haven’t actually slept since I was a little girl, in the hospital after the storm that vomited me up onto that beach in Galveston. Even then, I wasn’t asleep. I was drugged. But we’ll get to that later. When I was young and the shadow and I were new to each...

Grace’s bite shredded Laurent’s throat in a hot red shower of meat and blood. It pattered down to the dirty alley floor, staining the dirty gray drifts of snow. She pulled her clenched fist out of his chest cavity, bring a tide of viscera and gore, even as she lunged in for a second bite. The alley walls echoed with that metallic reptile growl vibrating in her throat and she shook him like a terrier shaking a rat, dropping the body and giving it a solid kick. “Who’s replaced now, you sleazy little shit?” “Holy fuck!” Honey squealed, falling...

Kay’s voice echoed throughout the building and alarms began sounding. “Shit, Svenka, get the goddamn door open!” Ren was frantic, pushing on the locked door. “Stand back Ren. There’s no reason for subtlety at this point.” I raised my foot to kick the door in but she forestalled me. “The security on this door hasn’t been compromised yet and I’d like to keep it that way.” At the same time Svenka chimed in over the mindlink.
