Friday Tunes: ‘Elected,’ Alice Cooper

“Elected” is a 1972 song by rock band Alice Cooper, the first Hot 100 hit on their 6th studio album Billion Dollar Babies. The single reached #26 during election week on the US charts, #4 on the UK charts and #3 in Austria. It inspired one of the first MTV-style story-line promo videos ever made for a song. The song was a radical re-write of their 1969 song “Reflected” from the album Pretties for You. (Wikipedia | Lyrics)

This thing about Rep. Jason Chaffetz troubles me. He says he won’t run for re-election, that he might even leave office early, and he swears there’s no scandal. And yet.

Chaffetz is – well, to put it bluntly, the guy’s a bastard. He got where he is by playing a canny game of politics, taking advantage of various systems, and screwing people over. He’s also a PR/marketing guy, so he knows how to play that game, too. He’s been in Congress eight terms, and he’s the chair of the House Oversight Committee, making him a powerful man in Congress. There’s been whispers about tapping him for a run at the presidency, and he’s talked about running for governor in Utah. (In fact, that’s why he says he’s quitting: for that gubernatorial run.)

And yet.

I dunno, guys, something’s weird here. He’s either got a nasty scandal of his own percolating in the background somewhere, or he’s getting out while the getting’s good. He’s provided a lot of cover for Trump in the last couple of months, so I’m wondering if we should read this move as a weather vane for what’s happening inside the Trump presidency. Keep an eye on this guy.
