Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) was shot in the hip and had to have surgery this morning, but it sounds like he’s going to be fine. Several other people (five, maybe? no confirmations yet) went to the hospital, too. Capitol Police arrived within minutes of the start of shooting and stopped the shooting. It sounds like a couple of those guys were hurt, but so far I haven’t heard anything too serious about them.
There was a rumor early this morning that Some Asshole asked if the players were Republicans or Democrats before opening fire, but that seems to be BS. Some jogger going by asked if they were Democrats or Republicans, and a few minutes later the shooter turned up. Descriptions seem to indicate it was two different guys.
(Edited to Add: There’s a lot of BS floating around about the shooting, as usual. Buzzfeed is tracking and correcting the bullshit here.)
Some Asshole is apparently dead. Good.
Now, for the love of little puppies with hearts on them, can we please talk about sensible gun control laws in this country?
- Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence – Statistics
- So far in 2017, 6,870 people have been killed by gun violence and there have been 13,489 injuries. 1,739 teens or children have been killed or injured. There’ve been 153 mass shootings like this morning’s. (GunViolenceArchive.org)
- FiveThirtyEight’s Gun Deaths in America
Witnesses claimed that something like 80-100 shots were fired this morning in a matter of a minute or two. That’s ridiculous. Upwards of five people were injured. Nothing but luck and a fast police response prevented deaths.
SmartGunLaws.org is full of good ideas that would limit gun violence without impinging on Second Amendment rights. It’s well past time we started putting a few of them into practice.
PS, people: There’s been a second mass shooting already today. Some Other Asshole shot up a large UPS processing facility in San Francisco this morning. Details.
