Supergirl: The Adventures of Supergirl (S2, Ep. 1 | Spoilers)

The season two premiere of Supergirl, debut of the show on The CW, was fantastic. It was everything the show should have been in the first place. It was well-paced, well-written, well-acted, funny, charming, heartfelt and hopeful. It was action-packed, with hints of drama and threads woven in for the rest of the season. There was a lot to love here. So much, in fact, that I’m completely willing to overlook some of the goofier, soft-reboot beats.

Ok, so, when the show opens, it’s been a whopping twelve hours since the close of season one. We get a quick recap of how things left off, with J’onn and Supergirl discovering the Kryptonian rocket ship and the guy inside. From there, we’re off to the races for some course correction from last season.

I’d say this episode is at least 50% course correction from the junk that wasn’t working last season.

  • The saccharine crap that tainted the last few episodes of season one is gone, replaced with action and hopeful charm. Let’s keep it that way.
  • Winn was a genius-level tech nerd who worked IT at a newspaper, last season, and the premiere sees him land a job at the DEO. I’m hoping this is also the end of icky Nice Guy™ Winn.
  • The James/Kara romance that was built up all season is summarily dropped, which I’m ambivalent about. Could lead into the CW’s ever-present relationship drama, or it could just be about making a female superhero show that doesn’t center around who the female superhero is dating. I’d prefer the latter.
  • The DEO has been moved from their crappy cave to a high rise with actual windows and stuff, which makes waaay more sense, since they’re a government organization tasked with dealing with hostile aliens that everyone already knows about anyway, so no point in it being secretive.
  • ACTUAL SUPERMAN. No more of the awkward foolishness of avoiding his existence or working around his presence that we got last season.

Just as we get this stuff resolved, a space ship launch goes entirely wrong, and Supergirl must fly to the rescue. She’s joined by her cousin, Superman, who happened to be in the area, apparently.

They save the ship, then set out to investigate together. Turns out the ship was partially built by none other than LexCorp, currently run by Lena Luthor, Lex’s little sister. (Lex himself is currently in jail due to an earthquake issue in California that Superman put a stop to. If that doesn’t sound familiar to you then shame. on. you.) So, of course we suspect Lena, but it turns out she’s the target, not the mastermind. The actual bad guy is an assassin who is quickly dealt with, then scooped up by Cadmus, so he can be turned into Metallo.

Metallo, guys. Yes. This season is gonna be so awesome.

There were a few goofy moments in this episode. Winn apparently learned Kryptonese overnight – I feel like that alone should have got him the job at the DEO. Kara changed her mind about James in twelve hours, which – damn girl, you didn’t even hit that once. That’s a terrible waste of an opportunity. Cat Grant is in the habit of trolling the crap out of her assistants/interns (because you know for a fact that Cat had like five more of those resume envelopes, each with a different job description scrawled on the front, in her desk, and she shoo’d Kara off marketing because she didn’t have an envelope for that one). The mystery man in the Kryptonian rocket (who isn’t that much of a mystery) didn’t age because he passed through apart of space where time doesn’t flow, like what? No. That is not a thing.

But none of those really mattered, because everything else was so spectacularly well done. I cannot wait for the rest of this season, people.
